The 23rd Psalm
King David’s son Amnon raped his sister Tamar, Absalom’s sister (they shared the same mother). Absalom eventually killed Amnon. Though King David was bothered by all of this he became comfortable with the sin, sidelining the crime he came to accept the sin, he became reconciled to the murder of his son and the rape of His daughter! Absalom became so disenchanted, so disgusted with his father’s inaction and refusal to render justice that he rebelled against his father David and staged a coup, violently taking the throne from his father David.
II Samuel 15:10-14. But Avshalom sent spies through all the tribes of Isra'el to say, "The moment you hear the sound of the shofar, then start proclaiming, 'Avshalom is king in Hevron.'" 11 With Avshalom went 200 men from Yerushalayim who had been invited; they went innocently, knowing nothing about the scheme. 12 Avshalom sent for Achitofel the Giloni, David's counselor, to come from his town Giloh and be with him while offering the sacrifices. The conspiracy grew strong, because the number of people favoring Avshalom kept increasing. 13 A messenger came to David saying, "The men of Isra'el have aligned themselves with Avshalom." 14 David said to all his servants with him in Yerushalayim, "Get up! We must flee! Otherwise none of us will escape from Avshalom. Hurry, and leave; or he will soon overtake us, attack us and put the city to the sword."
Avshalom hated and resented his father David, even refusing to come before the Kings throne to be reconciled to his father when ordered. This stewing hatred results in Avshalom rebelling against David forcing him into exile. As David is fleeing, he weeps and has a profound messianic revelation that’s recorded in Psalm 22 & 23. Psalm 22 is a cry for Messianic deliverance and salvation, verse 17 discusses the piercing of hands and feet and the Psalm ends with God’s power being made known to future generations! The 23rd Psalm, one of the most known scriptures in the bible is a profound promise of divine guidance and restoration!
A psalm of walking in God’s presence, of rest and rule, of walking in God’s shalom! We are living in very troubling times, times of uncertainty, fear, and anxiety. The 23rd Psalm is more prevalent than ever before for us today!
Psalm 23:1. (KJV) The LORD is my shepherd (Ro’i: Shephard, teacher, leader, ruler: root word is Re’a: friend, companion); I shall not want (chacer {khaw-sare'}: to lack, be without, have a need).
David declares God is his ruler, his leader, his teacher. When God leads and teaches you there is no want or needs, you will lack nothing! This is both spiritual and physical. But Adonai must be the leader and teacher, not yourself! This requires submission, humbleness, a broken and contrite heart. Far too many believers are Lone Wolves, they’ve been injured, hurt, or at least perceive themselves as injured and hurt, or they refuse to submit so they scorn Gods body and attempt to live all on their own which results in dismal failure and great need.
Psalm 23:2. (KJV) He maketh me to lie down in green (deshe' {deh'-sheh}: grass, new grass, young grass, sprout) pastures (na'ah {naw-aw'}: pasture, meadow, abode, abode of the shepherd, his habitation): he leadeth me beside the still waters.
When God is ruling, leading, and teaching He brings you too good, green pastures and still waters. Sprout is a term for Messiah!
Psalms 132:17. I will make a king sprout there from David’s line and prepare a lamp for my anointed one (Mashiach in Hebrew).
Lie down is Rabat’s in Hebrew to crouch, repose, lie down, stretch out in the abode of Mashiach, the shepherd! In the midst of trials, tribulation, even anarchy only God’s Shalom will calm your fleshly reactions in battle. The source of that Shalom is God Himself. Look at a description of His Royal Throne room:
Revelation 4:6. In front of the throne was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal. In the center, around the throne, were four living beings covered with eyes in front and behind.
The sea of glass is symbolic! Glass doesn’t contain ripples or waves! The sea before God’s throne is absolutely smooth, like glass! There are no anxieties, fear, or storms troubling God. He isn’t worried, panicked, anxious, or in a hurry. The sea around God is perfectly still, totally calm, at Shalom - the absence of conflict! When you walk with Him, when you live in Mashiach you are in that sea of glass, in Shalom! No fear, no doubt, no hurry. Complete victory, Dunamis Power, His voice flow out from the throne room when you are in His abode with Him!
Psalm 23:3. (KJV) He restoreth my soul (nephesh {neh'-fesh}: soul, self, life, mind, living being, desire, emotion, passion, inner being of man): he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
When we abide in in Him, when He leads you and teaches you He does what no one else can do, He restores your soul, your mind, your will, and even your emotions as a friend, a partner, as one who loves you. He will guide you on the path, the journey of righteousness, to be a Tzadik, to be right and one with Him. He teaches you how to Hear His voice and live in His presence. He does this for His Names Sake, for His purpose, not for our own. Far too many believers seek Him for personal reasons, personal gain, to seek an international ministry, a name, for fame and fortune. Adonai moves for His names sake, He restored Israel not for Israel’s sake but for His own name:
Ezekiel 36:21-22. But I am concerned about my holy name, which the house of Isra'el is profaning among the nations where they have gone. 22 "Therefore tell the house of Isra'el that Adonai ELOHIM says this: 'I am not going to do this for your sake, house of Isra'el, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have been profaning among the nations where you went.
God protects and defends His own honor. He alone is the source of ALL vindication! Vengeance is mine sayeth the Lord! His words do not come back void! It does what He sends it out to do. His word says He will restore Israel to its full land size, from the Euphrates River to the Nile, it will be so! His word says Israel shall be saved and Jerusalem restored as a praise on all the earth, it will be so! His word says Jew and Gentile will become one-and it will be so! His word says Yeshua is coming back a second time, it will be so! All for His Names Sake!
Psalm 23:4 (KJV). Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death (tsalmaveth {tsal-maw'-veth}: death, grave, calamity, deep shadow, deep darkness, shadow of death, darkness, distress, extreme danger, place of the dead), I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod (shebet {shay'-bet}: rod, staff, branch, offshoot) and thy staff (mish`enah {mish-ay-naw'}: Staff, Support) they comfort me
David declared this as he and his household are fleeing for their lives from his own son Absalom who has just made himself king over Israel. This is the worst conflict David has ever experienced. He’s facing great calamity, death, the grave! Yet he says he will fear no evil for Thy, His, God’s rod and staff comfort him. All Kings and leaders in the Ancient middle east carried a staff that represents their authority. We see Pharaoh with one as well as kings, even European monarchies carried staffs of Authority. It is also a sign of leadership and authority among the First Nations here! But what’s the rod?
There is a fascinating connection that may exist between a branch from the Tree of Life from the Garden of Eden and this rod mentioned several times in the Bible. This rod has been variously referred to as the rod of God, the rod of Moses, and Aaron's rod. According to Numbers 17:8 the rod miraculously budded almond blossoms and ripe fruit.
Back in Genesis 28 Yaacov comes into Canaan falls asleep on a Mountain and has a dream of a ladder with Angels ascending and descending on that ladder. He awakens and states that God is here and in:
Genesis 28:19. and named the place Beit-El [house of God]; but the town had originally been called Luz.
What was this place that Jacob called 'the house of God'? The place had been called Luz and renamed it Beit’El, meaning the 'House of God.'...Mount Moriah in Jerusalem is identified with the site of Jacob's dream. "An essential clue relating to the Tree of Life is found in the earliest known name for Mount Moriah, Luz. It means 'almond tree' in Aramaic, Arabic, and Ethiopic. According to The Torah Anthology, the city of Luz was associated with an immense almond tree.
It’s believed that at the time of Adam's expulsion from the Garden, God gave the rod to Adam. From Adam, the rod was passed down through the generations until it came into possession of Moses. “The Jewish Encyclopedia” states: “God gave Adam a branch from the Tree of Life, which was engraved with the Ineffable Name of God (YHVH). Considering its source, it must have been of supreme symbolic significance...Perhaps at some future time, a discovery will be made to verify the history of this divine rod."
According to rabbinical commentary and stories passed from generation to generation, the rod was transferred from Adam successively down the line to Enoch, Shem, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses and to David. Here’s the Subjective part, I’m not talking about scriptural truth, but this may be possible. The Rod whose name in Hebrew also means shoot, shoot of David, a messianic reference, this Rod, as passed down in tradition, could not be more than a Shabbat distance walk from the Ark, when David tells Tzadok to take the ark back to Jerusalem in II Samuel 15:25 Tzadok does so in verse 29. What about the Rod, tradition states that somewhere north of the city, around the place of the skull, Gulgotha, David stuck that rod in the ground! The rod blossomed and grew and became the tree Yeshua was crucified on! Did God’s son that died for eternal life be crucified on a stake, a branch from the tree of Life? The rollers of the Torah Scroll: Etz Chaim, trees of life!
David then learned what we know today when we receive Yeshua! There is a place of walking with God where you simply "fear no evil." David, who faced Lions, bears, the giant Goliath, even his own men who sought to stone him after Ziklag was captured and destroyed stood in the "shadow of death" itself, yet he feared no evil. David’s complete trust is in the Lord. He said, "You are with me." Because God is with you, because Yeshua vanquished death, He conquered Evil, every adversity, every battle, ever war, every crisis, every negative medical diagnosis you face will result in a complete victory if you live and walk in His presence He will deliver you for His namesake IF He is with you! In order to glorify His name! You become a testimony among the tribes and nations living around You of God’s Love, power and grace! David’s understanding, His comprehension of God’s love went beyond to the next level:
Psalms 23:5. (KJV). Thou preparest a table before me in the presence (Neged: what is conspicuous, what is in front of, before, in sight of, midst, presence, before your face, in your view, what is in front of) of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
The battle you are in will soon become a meal to you, an experience that will nourish and build you up spiritually. God hosts with luxury, He sets a table, a spread before us-anoints us with oil, are signs of luxury and favor. Banquet guests in Ancient Israel were anointed with oil! This speaks to God’s provision in the desert after the Exodus from Egypt. The overflowing cup is a reminder of the Passover Seder with the four cups the represents God Salvation and deliverance.
Enemies may have surround David, but he is saying that the provision and grace of God gives him such confidence that in a time when he should be fearful and anxious he is still able to enter into the presence of God, David can enter in and relax and eat! God provides for him! God is the one anointing his head with oil. David knows that he has all that he needs! I’m not sure most people could leave behind the material wealth like David did when fleeing… It’s not the material trappings of the worlds that comforts David, it’s the presence of God.
We too must position ourselves in the presence of God. To relax, even eat knowing that Yeshua has already made your enemies the footstool for your feet. From that banquet position of rest, anointing, and Shalom the Word of the Lord will go forth:
Psalm 110;2. ADONAI will send your powerful scepter out from Tziyon, so that you will rule over your enemies around you.
All victory comes from seeking God’s presence until you find Him, and after finding Him, allowing His presence to fill your spirit with His peace. From full assurance at His right hand, as you rest in His victory, so will you rule in the midst of your enemies. Then:
Psalms 23:6. (KJV) Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
The time we live in is not one of timidity, put one of might and power! David, who wrote this Psalm was one of the mightiest warriors recorded in the word! He is a man after God’s own heart, a warrior, a worshipper whose first weapon was the harp. David knew how to enter into the perfect Shalom, the peace of God in the midst of Chaos. He writes this as he is escaping, fleeing a rebellious son who seeks his throne and life! In the midst of this David says the Lord will prepare a banquet for him in the midst of, in front of, in the presence of his enemies. David’s enemies will see the Presence of God with him as he banquets in full view of his enemies! If it wasn’t for God’s presence one would see this statement as haughty, even reckless arrogance but David knew who he served!
Like David we must show up and enforce the Word of God in our environment, in our society, and in our lives!! This is not a time for timidity but of
II Timothy 1:7. (NKJV) For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
We must stop talking about the One New Man and become it, we must stop talking about racial reconciliation and do somethings about it. We must stop talking about purity and holiness and do something about it. We must stop talking about God and start living like God-we must enforce Gods word!
