Simchat Torah
The main celebration of Simchat Torah takes place in the synagogue during evening and morning services. In many congregations, this is the only time of year on which the Torah scrolls are taken out of the ark and read at night. It’s traditional that the first reading of Genesis are read in the synagogue.
It's the time when the entire Ke'hilot, the entire congregation leave their seats to dance and sing along with the Torah scroll in joyous celebration! Why do we do this? Is it idle worship? No, it’s L'ahavat Torah, Love of Torah! It is the acknowledgment that God’s word is life itself! A common name for Yeshua in 21st century Israel was Yeshua HaTorah! Yeshua, the living word!
Psalms 119:165. Those who love your Torah have great peace; nothing makes them stumble.
I’s not God's intention to burden His people! God stated that those who love and follow Him are not to obey Torah out of fear and obligation, but rather out of love for him, his teachings, and His ways. God wants all of His people to write His Torah on their hearts (circumcised heart) and obey him as a child obeys his father, out of love and respect.
If the Torah is not written on the heart, then it’s only an obligation, a burdensome set of regulations that one must live by, restricting one’s life (darkness hates the light) But once Torah circumcises the heart, the individual lives a Torah, God centered life filled with love, joy and gladness.
Love and Torah are inseparable. If one keeps and obeys the Torah, it is an unconditional display of love for God. To love God is to keep and obey His Torah. This is revealed in Hebrew idioms found in Torah such as:
Deuteronomy 11:1. "Therefore, you are to love ADONAI your God and always obey his commission, regulations, rulings and mitzvot.
This was clearly understood by the 1st century Messianic Jews who followed and received Yeshua:
I John 5:3. For loving God means obeying his commands. Moreover, his commands are not burdensome,
We rejoice in this love this evening as we dance with the Torah, Yeshua! We are engaged in 1st century worship in the 21st century!
God’s teaching-Torah does not mean Law. Law comes from the Greek word nomia, which means unalterable, unchangeable. Torah means God’s teaching that hits the mark as an arrow hits a bull’s eye. This is one of the most pressing areas of deception and apostasy among the greater body of believers. Nomia actually means Torah. English translations of Law do not accurately relay or convey the essence of God’s word, in fact the translations cast a negative light upon God’s eternal, unchanging, unalterable, ineffable word!
Torah is God’s teaching for mans needs, its nourishment for our soul, it is life! Torah teaches who God is and what Righteousness looks like. Torah is Love.
Romans 13:9 For the commandments, “don’t commit adultery, Don’t murder, Don’t steal, Don’t covet” and any others are summed up in this one rule “Love your neighbor as yourself.
Torah is a covenant, a contract, a wedding contract. A binding document/agreement between God and His people giving God’s promises for us and to us, IF we are obedient and submit to God!
The outline of the covenant is recorded in Torah, Torah itself is that Covenant. Leviticus 17:11 records that the life is in the blood and that blood must be placed on the altar for sin atonement. Blood is required to restore the created being to the creator to remove the Sin that separates us from that creator. The only way into our fathers presence is through the blood of the covenant established by Yeshua 2,000 years ago who is the perfection of the covenant. Yeshua brought us into covenant and removed sin for the first time ever in history with His blood.
We, the Jewish People, Israel, are the only people in the world who’s identity is based solely on a Covenant with God. This covenant defines our culture and expression of worship-as it should for everyone who received Yeshua and calls upon the name of the Lord God of Israel.
Romans 9:4-5. the people of Isra'el! They were made God's children, the Sh'khinah has been with them, the covenants are theirs, likewise the giving of the Torah, the Temple service and the promises; 5 the Patriarchs are theirs; and from them, as far as his physical descent is concerned, came the Messiah, who is over all. Praised be ADONAI forever! Amen.
We cannot be in covenant with both God and the World. God reveals His Glory through His covenant and warns not to enter into that covenant lightly.
Exodus 34:10 - He said, "Here, I am making a covenant; in front of all your people I will do wonders such as have not been created anywhere on earth or in any nation. All the people around you will see the work of ADONAI. What I am going to do through you will be awesome!
Serving God according to His plan will get the attention of the nations and people around you and sets the metric for success in life:
Psalm 1:2-3. Their delight is in ADONAI's Torah; on his Torah they meditate day and night. 3 They are like trees planted by streams -they bear their fruit in season, their leaves never wither, everything they do succeeds.
Delight in Hebrew is 'esher {eh'-sher} means happiness, delight, blessed from the Hebrew root Asher which means to walk the straight path, to set right, to pronounce happiness, to BE Blessed, to walk in honesty and prosperity! How is this done, Through Adonai’s Torah. Those who know it, those who meditate on it day and night bear fruit, never wither, and all that they do succeeds! It was the foundation of the 1st century expression of worship that continued on until 325 AD. The first Talmidim where successful and bore great fruit:
Acts 21:20. On hearing it, they praised God; but they also said to him, "You see, brother, how many tens of thousands of believers there are among the Judeans, and they are all zealots for the Torah.
Sha’ul’s own testimony bears witness to the foundation of their beliefs:
Acts 24:14-16. "But this I do admit to you: I worship the God of our fathers in accordance with the Way (which they call a sect). I continue to believe everything that accords with the Torah and everything written in the Prophets.
Believe in the Greek is pisteuo {pist-yoo'-o} which means to think to be true, to trust; from the Greek root word Pistis which means conviction of Truth, conviction or belief respecting man's relationship to God and divine things, generally with the included idea of trust and holy fervor born of faith and joined with it, relating to God. What is Sha’ul’s conviction and truth relating to God? Everything that accords in Torah and the prophets! The same Sha’ul wrote these words in:
Romans 2:13. For it is not merely the hearers of Torah whom God considers righteous; rather, it is the doers of what Torah says who will be made righteous in God's sight.
Doers in the Greek is poietes {poy-ay-tace'}, a doer, a performer, one who obeys or fulfils Torah! This is how you become a Tzedek, righteous before God! The same exact word is found in:
James 1:25. But if a person looks closely into the perfect Torah, which gives freedom, and continues, becoming not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work it requires, then he will be blessed in what he does.
Blessed is makarios {mak-ar'-ee-os} in the Greek, blessed, happy! Same vernacular as delights from Psalm 1 'esher {eh'-sher} means happiness, delight, blessed! There is a pattern established here, a path that weaves throughout both the Torah, Tanach, and Brit Chadesha! Blessings, success, happiness, and prosperity belong to the one who stops being a hearing of God’s word and becomes a doer of what Torah says! This is further expounded in:
Psalms 19:7-11. The Torah of ADONAI is perfect, restoring the inner person. The instruction of ADONAI is sure, making wise the thoughtless. 8 The precepts of ADONAI are right, rejoicing the heart. The mitzvah of ADONAI is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of ADONAI is clean, enduring forever. The rulings of ADONAI are true, they are righteous altogether, 10 more desirable than gold, than much fine gold, also sweeter than honey or drippings from the honeycomb. 11 Through them your servant is warned; in obeying them there is great reward.
We have experienced this as a people and a nation for almost 4,000 years! When we are obedient to God we live in safety with blessings and provisions. When both people and nations don’t follow God and His word there is divisiveness, scattering, and judgment!
Nehemiah 1:6-9. Let your ear now be attentive and your eyes be open, so that you will listen to the prayer of your servant, which I am praying before you these days, day and night, for the people of Isra'el your servants - even as I confess the sins of the people of Isra'el that we have committed against you. Yes, I and my father's house have sinned. 7 We have deeply offended you. We haven't observed the mitzvot, laws or rulings you ordered your servant Moshe. 8 Remember, please, the word you gave through your servant Moshe, 'If you break faith, I will scatter you among the peoples; 9 but if you return to me, observe my mitzvot and obey them, then, even if your scattered ones are in the most distant part of heaven, nevertheless, I will collect them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen for bearing my name.'
Yeshua taught us that a divided house cannot stand!
Matthew 12:25. However, knowing what they were thinking, Yeshua said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not survive.
Why do we have so many denominations in both Christianity and Judaism? Why is the greater body weak. Un-influential, and not blessed? Separation from Torah, from God’s word! This separation brings division, division bring anemia, weakness, and death! Yeshua warned us about this 2,000 years ago!
Matthew 24:10-12. At that time many will be trapped into betraying and hating each other, 11 many false prophets will appear and fool many people; 12 and many people's love will grow cold because of increased distance from Torah.
We are divinely placed as Messianic Believers to repair the walls, to repair the breeches, to return the body back to truth.
Isaiah 58:12-14. You will rebuild the ancient ruins, raise foundations from ages past, and be called "Repairer of broken walls, Restorer of streets to live in." 13 "If you hold back your foot on Shabbat from pursuing your own interests on my holy day; if you call Shabbat a delight, ADONAI's holy day, worth honoring; then honor it by not doing your usual things or pursuing your interests or speaking about them. 14 If you do, you will find delight in ADONAI - I will make you ride on the heights of the land and feed you with the heritage of your ancestor Ya'akov, for the mouth of ADONAI has spoken."
We decree right now the end to all the scattering! We proclaim an end to all the division and its associated processes among God’s people! It has gone on long enough! Yeshua, Ha Torah came to end the division and scattering! He died for it! Through Jeremiah, Adonai spoke a somber warning:
Jeremiah 23:1. "Oh no! The shepherds are destroying and scattering the sheep in my pasture!" says ADONAI.
Yeshua makes is crystal clear in
John 10:16. Also I have other sheep which are not from this pen; I need to bring them, and they will hear my voice; and there will be one flock, one shepherd.
Yeshua speaks of the scattering just a few verses prior to this in
John 10:12. The hired hand, since he isn't a shepherd and the sheep aren't his own, sees the wolf coming, abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf drags them off and scatters them.
Wolf in the Greek is lukos {loo'-kos} metaph. of cruel, greedy, rapacious, destructive men Lyookos is the root word of Loo-koos and means garments of light, garments of Angels! How can we connect garments of angels and cruel greedy, rapacious destructive men?
II Corinthians 11:14-15. There is nothing surprising in that, for the Adversary himself masquerades as an angel of light; 15 so it's no great thing if his workers masquerade as servants of righteousness. They will meet the end their deeds deserve.
The wolves are workers of HaSatan, masquerading as angels of light! And what do they do? Scatter the sheep! Division! The Lord says:
Jeremiah 23:3-4. I myself will gather what remains of my flock from all the countries where I have driven them and bring them back to their homes, and they will be fruitful and increase their numbers. 4 I will appoint shepherds over them who will shepherd them; then they will no longer be afraid or disgraced; and none will be missing," says ADONAI
Shepherd them in Hebrew is ra`ah {raw-aw'}, to tend, shepherd, teach, feed! Just as Yeshua quoted in Matthew 4:4 it is what God’s shepherds do:
Deuteronomy 8:3. He humbled you, allowing you to become hungry, and then fed you with man, which neither you nor your ancestors had ever known, to make you understand that a person does not live on food alone but on everything that comes from the mouth of ADONAI.
Right now, as we celebrate God’s word, which came from Pey Adonai, the Mouth of the Lord, as we’ve been humbling ourselves and submitting our hearts to His will these past several weeks, we are the first fruits, we are becoming "gathered together." What allows us to be bound together, Jew & Gentile, Black, Asian, Hispanic is the Love of Messiah that has grafted us all into the Olive Tree, Israel! The fuel and foundation of this process is the unadulterated word of God! The bride seeking God according to His precepts and commands, on His timeline following His calendar! Rehearsing and prepared for the Grooms’ return! For when Yeshua returns, we will be "one flock with one Shepherd", holy and blameless before Him as established through His word!
If we do not adjust to His will, we will be powerless, unable to stand against the enemy. The hour in which we live is not one of peace; it is a time of famine, plague, war! In such an hour a house divided cannot stand. God is gathering us together not only to unify with Him but also against the spiritual forces of wickedness in every region. Therefore, the breaches between us must be filled, the walls built, and we must learn to stand together in the day of the Lord.
