Don’t Look Back

Luke 9:57-62.  As they were traveling on the road, a man said to him, "I will follow (akoloutheo {ak-ol-oo-theh'-o}: To follow the same road, to become a disciple, to accompany, to join as an attendant, follow) you wherever you go." 58 Yeshua answered him, "The foxes have holes, and the birds flying about have nests, but the Son of Man has no home (Klino: A slant or slope to lay your head, a place to recline, of the declining of the day- a home or place to lay down, a bed) of his own." 59 To another he said, "Follow me!" but the man replied, "Sir, first let me go away and bury my father." 60 Yeshua said, "Let the dead bury their own dead; you, go and proclaim the Kingdom of God!" 61 Yet another said, "I will follow you, sir, but first let me say good-by to the people at home." 62 To him Yeshua said, "No one who puts his hand (cheir {khire} : the hand (literally or figuratively [power]; Hebrew word play: a means or instrument of power) to the plow and keeps looking back (Looking: blepo {blep'-o}: to see, discern with the bodily eye, perceive by the use of the eyes: to look at, look upon, gaze at, to perceive by the senses, to feel, to know by experience, to have the power of understanding, to turn the thoughts or direct the mind to a thing, contemplate.  Back: opiso {op-is'-o}: back, behind, after, afterwards, things that are behind, back in time, towards the rear) is fit to serve in the Kingdom of God."

Yeshua first encounter with someone on the road in this passage to would be followers reveals a powerful understanding when he answers in verse 58; I have no bed, no home, no place to lay down.  He gives a powerful understanding, He’s in this world but not of it.  He’s passing through, unhindered by material wealth or possessions, Yeshua is a Sojourner here, a citizen and son of Heaven.  Psalms 39 captures this, the brevity of human life is a mere breath, life is short and unpredictable!  Our only hope rests in trusting Adonai!  Our short-lived life purpose should be one of devotion and service unto God not the things of this world:

Psalms 39:12. Hear my prayer, ADONAI, listen to my cry, don't be deaf to my weeping; for with you, I am just a traveler passing through, like all my ancestors.

Yeshua understood He was an alien, a foreigner passing through just as you and I are!  Don’t get too wrapped up in this world because its passing!  Our focus is on Heaven, our true home!  A second person comes across Yeshua on the road in verse 59 to whom Yeshua says: “Follow Me”.  Whereupon the person asks to go bury their father.  This is a fascinating word play.  The person doesn’t say my father died and I need to bury him!  They just say I need to bury my father; “Thepto” in the Greek: to bury, inter, or funeral rites.

Yeshua says let the dead bury the dead in verse 60.  Dead in the Greek is; “Nekos”: one that has breathed his last, lifeless, deceased, departed, destitute of life, without life, inanimate and the spiritually dead. One who is destitute of a life that recognizes and is devoted to God, one given up to trespasses and sin. A person inactive as regarding doing right, destitute of force or power, inactive, inoperative.  This person is either physical dead or spiritually dead, powerless!

A third person comes across Yeshua and states a desire to follow Him but they first desire to go home and say goodbye to their family’s or sons in verse 61.  After this third persons request Yeshua gives another profound revelation, a revelation of great clarity that is expressly and profoundly a relevant message for us today in verse 62:

Luke 9:62.  To him Yeshua said, "No one who puts his hand (cheir {khire}: the hand (literally or figuratively [power]; Hebrew word play: a means or instrument of power-to touch the power of God) to the plow and keeps looking back (Looking: blepo {blep'-o}: to see, discern with the bodily eye, perceive by the use of the eyes: to look at, look upon, gaze at, to perceive by the senses, to feel, to know by experience, to have the power of understanding, to turn the thoughts or direct the mind to a thing, contemplate.  Back: opiso {op-is'-o}: back, behind, after, afterwards, things that are behind, back in time, towards the rear) is fit to serve in the Kingdom of God."

Yeshua said there’s is no going back!  There’s no good old days, just now and tomorrow when you set your sights upon the Kingdom of God, when you place your hands, the symbol of your power and strength upon the plow (plowing signifies the implanting of truth in good soil, the seed is the Good News) there can be no longing for the old ways, the old self, for the old evil and wicked things when one has set his face toward doing what is right.  Too look back upon your old unrighteous self or worse longing for those days makes one unfit for the kingdom of God.

The corrupted system Yeshua is speaking too, the earthly Temple and the Sanhedrin are coming to an end.  Yeshua is speaking to a generation that is in the middle of a profound, radical paradigm shift.  The Temple system was quickly accelerating to the end. Sacrifices no longer accepted by God in the Temple, sins are forgiven through Yeshua. The altar of God moved to our heart.  [EC6] Gentiles are to be included and the Ruach HaKodesh is being released.  We don’t fully comprehend the radical nature, scope and intensity of the change that was implemented 2,000 years ago.  The Dunamis power, the signs and wonders, the voice of God is now accessible to EVERYONE, to every person calls upon the name of the Lord!  This was a radical power shift as well and those in power didn’t like it.  JUST LIKE WHATS HAPPENEING TODAY!  You are alive in just such a time!  The old doesn’t like the new, in fact it’s quite common for the old to attempt to kill or destroy what God is doing.

Yeshua says there’s no going back.  You can’t jump into the move of God and look back to the old system, the old way, to contemplate and dwell upon what was.  That’s yesterday’s manna!  Those who do are not Fit to serve in the kingdom, it’s a showstopper.  Yeshua confirms this in:

Matthew 9:16-17.  No one patches an old coat with a piece of unshrunk cloth, because the patch tears away from the coat and leaves a worse hole. 17 Nor do people put new wine in old wineskins; if they do, the skins burst, the wine spills and the wineskins are ruined. No, they pour new wine into freshly prepared wineskins, and in this way both are preserved."
New wine is being poured out, we must be new wine skins.  If you are not pliable, if one is not renewed the new wine will destroy the old.  The skins or cloth represent individuals. The patch or the wine is the new teaching, new outpouring that the individual consumes or receives.  Now apply this profound understanding to Yeshua’s statement:

New garment = untrained, unrestricted
Old garment = previously trained, older movements
Patch = New teaching, new outpouring of God’s spirit

New wineskins = untrained, unrestricted
Old wineskins = previously trained, older movements
New wine = New teaching, new outpouring of God’s spirit
Old wine = previous teaching, the old outpouring

Every great move of God in the last 2,000 years has resulted in those with whom God was using in the new move to be thrown out or removed from the current religious base.  Jeremiah, Isaiah, Yeshua, Luther, Fox, John Wesley, Evan Roberts, William Seymour, Aimee Semple McPherson, Kathryn Coleman to name but a few.  All were shunned by the current establishment when God began to move.  The old refuses to accept the new.

Revelation 18:2-4.  He cried out in a strong voice, "She has fallen! She has fallen! Bavel the Great! She has become a home for demons, a prison for every unclean spirit, a prison for every unclean, hated bird. 3 "For all the nations have drunk of the wine of God's fury caused by her whoring - yes, the kings of the earth went whoring with her, and from her unrestrained love of luxury the world's businessmen have grown rich." 4 Then I heard another voice out of heaven say: "My people, come out of her! so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not be infected by her plagues,

We are at a crossroads, a monumental purging from the sins of Jeroboam, of Hellenistic, Babylonian world system of religion and government.  Adonai is calling us to come out of her quickly and not look back!  Don’t pine for the days of old or the way it used to be! Once you’ve come out of the Hellenistic, Babylon based system (religiously and economically) you can never go back.  Once you experience the power of God, once you hear His voice, once the Ruach HaKodesh invades your life, when you receive Yeshua and the supernatural begins there is no going back.  In fact, Yeshua tells us not to look back or you’ll be deemed unfit for the kingdom of God.

You can’t love the world and the Kingdom of God, the two are mutually exclusive!  I’ve shared this before; many well intended believers pray incorrectly because they fear their comfortable lifestyle will change.  They are in love with their possessions, homes, and other material wealth.  Remember, you’re passing through here, this is not YOUR kingdom! We are citizens of heaven so stop getting so attached to things here!  This will all fade away!  All of it!  Let the dead take care of it, it belongs to them anyway!

We have another powerful example of this in Genesis 19.  The Lord is bringing Judgment upon Sodom and Gomorrah.   Their offences have angered God. Abraham stood in the gap and bartered with God if they could find ten righteous God would spare the place.  Ten righteous people couldn’t be found but Lot lives there with his family.  Angels come to warn Lot and his family to get out and leave the place lest they get caught up in the punishment.  The night before the towns deviant homosexual men come to have sex with the angels who had appeared as men.  The Angels wind up blinding them so:

Genesis 19:15-17.  When morning came, the angels told Lot to hurry. "Get up," they said, "and take your wife and your two daughters who are here; otherwise you will be swept away (tisafeh: sweep or snatched away, destroy, consumed, to be snatched away, be destroyed) in the punishment of the city."  16 But he dallied, so the men took hold of his hand, his wife's hand and the hands of his two daughters -ADONAI was being merciful to him - and led them, leaving them outside the city. 17 When they had brought them out, he said, "Flee for your life! Don't look behind (al-tabit: look, to regard with pleasure, favor, care, consider, regard, have respect) and don't stop anywhere in the plain, but escape to the hills! Otherwise you will be swept away."

Remember, Lot is sitting at the city gate.  Though he isn’t from there he is considered an elder or judge.  They are wrapped up in the affairs of the city.  The Angels plead with them to get going but Lot dallies, he doesn’t want to go.  The angels dragged them out by the hand with orders to not look behind them.  God is done with those cities!  His judgment is about to be poured out upon this horrible place and Lot dallies……his life is in danger of being consumed, destroyed, swept away! Lot obviously didn’t care.

He’s comfortable there.  Life is good even though its wicked and sinful….! Sound familiar!  Life is good here even though it’s sinful and wicked.  In fact, Lot didn’t want to go back to shepherding.  In the very next verse, verse 19 Lot says Oh God No-not the hills.  He’s so used to his comfortable city life that he argues with the angels against going into the hills but rather to go to another small town nearby.  The angel says he will give Lot special consideration and let him go to that little town.  But his wife?

Genesis 19:26.  But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a column of salt (melach {meh'-lakh} Salt, to disappear as dust, to vanish).

So many believers dally, they are comfortable, they don’t want their life to change!  They want to grab the plow, they dream about going forward but they can’t let go of their comfortable lives, soul ties, material wealth, they are looking backwards.

Numbers 11:4-6.  Next, the mixed crowd that was with them grew greedy for an easier life (T’avah: desire, incline, covet, wait longingly, wish, want, desire, lust, look upon longingly); while the people of Isra'el, for their part, also renewed their weeping and said, "If only we had meat to eat! 5 We remember the fish we used to eat in Egypt - it cost us nothing! -and the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, the garlic! 6 But now we're withering away, we have nothing to look at but this man."

We aren’t the first people to go through this, there is nothing new under the sun. In another example God gives stern words to Judah, after God had punished, judged Ephraim, Israel, Shomron for the sins of Jeroboam which were what?  Creating a false religion, false practices that are not of God:

Jeremiah 7:8-15.  Look! You are relying on deceitful words that can't do you any good. 9 First you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, offer to Ba'al and go after other gods that you haven't known. 10 Then you come and stand before me in this house that bears my name and say, 'We are saved' - so that you can go on doing these abominations! 11 Do you regard this house, which bears my name, as a cave for bandits? I can see for myself what's going on," says ADONAI. 12 "Go to the place in Shiloh that used to be mine, that used to bear my name, and see what I did to it because of the wickedness of my people Isra'el. 13 I spoke to you again and again, but you wouldn't listen. I called you, but you wouldn't answer. Now," says ADONAI, "because you have done all these things, 14 I will do to the house that bears my name, on which you rely, and to the place I gave you and your ancestors, what I did to Shiloh; 15 and I will drive you out of my presence, just as I drove out all your kinsmen, all the descendants of Efrayim."'

The presence of God is the litmus test that we are on the right path, that we are going in the right direction.  If you are not the presence of God is not there.  If the presence of God is there then there are acts the supernatural, signs and wonders, miracles and a manifestation of all the gifting’s of the Ruach.

Jeremiah 7:22-25.  For I didn't speak to your ancestors or give them orders concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices when I brought them out of the land of Egypt. 23 Rather, what I did order them was this: 'Pay attention to what I say. Then I will be your God, and you will be my people. In everything, live according to the way that I order you, so that things will go well for you.' 24 But they neither listened nor paid attention, but lived according to their own plans, in the stubbornness of their evil hearts, thus going backward (L’chor: backwards, behind, the hereafter) not forward. 25 You have done this from the day your ancestors came out of Egypt until today. Even though I sent you all my servants the prophets, sending them time after time,

To look backwards is death!  To look backwards is to reject God of which He doesn’t care too much for:

Jeremiah 15:6.  You have rejected me," says ADONAI. "You are heading backward. So I am stretching out my hand against you; tired of sparing you, I am destroying you.

As you begin or strengthen your Messianic Walk with God in Yeshua there is no going back.
We are not going back to a separated Church and Synagogue, we’re not looking back to Babylon, Hellenism, or even Judaism.  No more pining for Egypt or the way things used to be!  We must come every week seeking the new manna, new bread from heaven.  There is a fresh outpouring, new wine, a new patch awaiting for those who will seek Him, who will become a new wine skin, a new coat and receive all that God has!

Love and Blessings,

Rabbi Eric S Carlson
