Shalom and Chag Sameach (Happy Holidays)!
October is here, we’re full swing into the autumn season!! October is the tenth month of the year, named after the Latin word for eight “octo” because it was the eighth month in the ancient Roman calendar.
With great sadness and a heavy heart, we remember the one year anniversary of the Hamas invasion of Israel on October 7th 2023. Hamas terrorists breached the Gaza–Israel barrier, attacking military bases and massacring civilians in 21 communities, including Be'eri, Kfar Aza, Nir Oz, Netiv Haasara, and Alumim. In total the attackers killed 1,139 people: 695 Israeli civilians (including 38 children), 71 foreign nationals, and 373 members of the security forces. 364 civilians were killed and many more wounded while attending the Nova music festival. Our people were brutally raped, tortured, babies were broiled alive in ovens and some killed in microwaves. Parents were murdered in from of their children and children were raped, tortured and murdered in front of their parents! 120 hostages still remain unaccounted for with 40 known to be deceased! Never again is now! We shall never forget!
We start the Fall Feast Celebrations with Yom Teruah on Wednesday, October 2nd at sunset followed by Yom Kippur on Friday, October 11th at sunset, then the start of Sukkot on Wednesday, October 16th at sunset! Then we celebrate Simcha Torah on Friday, October 25th at our Erev Shabbat service. The month of Tishrei is considered the holiest month of the Hebrew calendar as all the Fall Feast celebrations are in this month. Yeshua celebrated these holidays as most importantly; they speak of the Living God of Israel.
Adonai commanded Moses:
Leviticus 23:2. Tell the people of Isra'el: 'The designated times of ADONAI which you are to proclaim as holy convocations are my designated times.
The word feasts in this passage is Moedim in Hebrew: an appointed times, appointed place, a meeting time! The Moedim are specific observances God has designated to be holy, or set apart. Their holiness comes from the tremendous spiritual significance God has attached to each. These fall biblical feasts build upon one another in meaning and progressively reveal Yeshua’s return for the bride and the wedding feast!
The designated time of Adonai are incredibly meaningful, vital, and important to Him which means they should be just as meaningful, vital, and important to you. God provided a road map in His Word detailing each step He has taken and will take to accomplish His great purpose for all mankind. He invites you not only to know about it, but to participate in it.
October 14th is Indigenous Peoples’ Day (occurs on the second Monday in October). Indigenous Peoples’ Day honors the histories, cultures, and perspectives of Indigenous peoples and their ancestors who lived on the land now known as North America. They existed in these areas for thousands of years before the first European explorers arrived. The birth of our nation is complex! America wasn’t discovered! There were complex and advanced Indigenous societies here when the European explorer and colonists arrived here. By understanding each other’s cultures, backgrounds, and sufferings we engage each other with compassion and empathy to heal our wounds! Consider honoring our indigenous people by visiting one or more of these cultural Museums:
Rappahannock Tribal Museum
Rappahannock Tribal Center
5036 Indian Neck Road
Indian Neck, VA 23148
Historic Jamestowne Visitor Center and Museum
1368 Colonial Pkwy
Jamestown, VA 23081
It’s only through prayer and action that we can make a difference! As the leaves start transitioning to their fall foliage and we prepare for the Fall Feast Days we pray for a calm to all of life’s storms. We ask for the authority of Yeshua to boldly rebuke every challenging situation. We declare a peace that surpasses all understanding to overtake everyone that needs it that we may celebrate the appointed times with joy and gladness! We pray you have a safe, healthy, prosperous, and blessed month!
Love and blessings,
Rabbi Eric and Rebbetzin Barb Carlson
